getting around .public transport

un vaporettoThe public transport of the ACTV is usually punctual and meets the needs of both the inhabitants and tourists. Obviously, when the city is very crowded the vaporettos and motorboats tend to be packed which leads to short delays. The Actv usually organises extra boats during special events such as carneval to decongest the normal lines.

imbarcadero alla ca'd'oroIf you visit Venice during a particular event such as the Regata Storica or the Vogalonga you should remember that the Canal Grande is closed to motorised boats which means that the public transport is greatly reduced if not stopped completely.

Tickets can be bought at the principal landing stages or at tobacconists with the Actv sign; if you get on a boat without a ticket, you have to ask the "captain" for one immediately.

un motoscafoThe way the different lines are organised is a bit complicated so:
- pay attention to the indications of the boat number and destination inside the landing stages. This is especially important because sometimes more than one boat line stops at the landing stages so the boats go in different directions.
- before you get on the boat make sure which line it is: the number and main stops are shown on the metal panels aboard the boats. If there isn't one, ask the "captain". These panels also indicate if (andwhere) the line stops if its stops sooner than normal ("limitato"). Don't confuse the line number with the large number painted on the sides of the boat!.

If you want the timetable and an accurate map of all the public transport lines, visit the site of the Azienda di Trasporti ACTV.
