PROCURATIE VECCHIE

Along the longer side of Piazza S.Marco on the side of the Clock tower.
Original Veneto-Byzantine construction of the XII cent. It was rebuilt in a Renaissance style from 1514 on, based on original plans by the Architect Mauro Codussi.
In 1532 Jacopo Sansovino was placed in charge of the building and saw it to its completion.

The termin "Procuratia" comes from "Procuratori della Repubblica" - the highest position of the Magistracy after the doge- whom they were originally meant for.

Under the 50 arches of the ground floor arcades, there are numerous shops, the famous cafés "Quadri" and "L'Avena" and the three entrances to the Piazza
