CAMPANILE (Bell Tower) OF S.MARCO

Constructed in its current form between 1511 and 1514, collapsed 14 July 1902 without hurting anybody or causing great damage.
It was rebuilt in its identical form between 1903 and 1912.

It is approx. 99 metres high to the angel, square shaft in brick with pilasters, each side 12 metres.
The golden angel was placed on a pyramidal steeple in 1513 and was almost completely rebuilt after the bell tower collapsed, placed on a mobile platform that turns with the wind.
Of the five original bells (called Marangona, Trottiera, Nona, Mezza Terza and Maleficio) only the largest, called Marangona still remains. The others were destroyed when the bell tower collapsed in 1902 and have been replaced..

From the belfry - which can be reached by means of a lift (L. 8000 from 9.00 to 19.00) - one has a marvellous panorama of the city and lagoon.

At the bottom of the bell tower one can see Sansovino's LOGGETTA, built between 1537 and 1549, decorated with marble and bronze.
