The
famous "gondola ride" is definitely one of the most typical things
to do for those who are visiting Venice. It is also one of the most beautiful,
romantic and interesting ways to get to know the city.
Sitting
in the gondola with a feeling of almost being in the water, the gondoliers guide
you along the innumerable canals. Thus, you get to know the "other Venice"
which is completely different to the one you see on foot: different perspectives,
unique views, moments of complete silence even in the middle of the day and
parts of the city that can only be seen from the water in this unique manner..
The official rate for a fifty-minute trip is 120.000 lire/62 euro for a maximum
of 6 people. After 20.00 there is an additional cost of 30.000 lire/15.50 euro.
It is also possible to ask for a change in itinerary but you need to agree upon
the new price.
The
ranks are called "stazi" and can be found in the most touristic areas.
However, the gondoliers often offer their services in different places around
the city. If this is the case, make sure that what you are being offered is
really a gondola. The easiest way to do this is to look for the famous "ferro"
with seven metal teeth (see photo above).
Of course, it is not at all serious if you do go in a rowing boat ("sandolo
a remi") but you should at least be aware of it.
It's
possible that not everyone knows there is another way of using the gondola -
the traghetto. It costs a mere 700 Lire and is used an awful lot by the Venetians.
It allows you to cross the Canal Grande at eight different places:
- between Ferrovia (the station) and Fondamenta S.Simeon Piccolo
- between S.Marcuola and Fontego dei Turchi
- between S.Sofia (Ca'd'Oro) and Rialto market
- between riva del Carbon and riva del Vin a Rialto
- between S.Tomà and S.Angelo
- between S.Samuele and S.Barnaba
- between S.Maria del Giglio and calle del Traghetto in Dorsoduro
- tra la punta della Dogana de Mar e S.Marco-calle Vallaresso
The gondolas used here are slightly different to the others and are called "parada".
Finally, some advice. If you do finally decide to do this famous "gondola
ride", be careful that it isn't low-tide: you wouldn't see the city at
its best.
