Car hire and car parks.

Quite a few people hire a car to come to Venice and then leave it for a couple of days in the car parks of Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto.
They thus have to pay both the car hire and the cost of the car park.
You can avoid this completely by returning the car to one of the car hire companies in the city when arriving in Venice. Obviously the car hire company must be the same one you actually rented it from originally.
Below is a link to the list of all car hire firms around Venice. The most convenient ones are those found in Piazzale Roma.

Taking the vaporetto and paying the Venetian, not tourist rate.

There are two different tariffs in Venice for public transport:
an ordinary ticket costs 6.000 lire while anyone who has the CARTA VENEZIA only has to pay 1.500 lire.

The problem is that only residents of the Veneto can apply for the CARTA VENEZIA.

So what should you do if you do not live in the Veneto and are going to spend a while in Venice?

One possible solution is: to apply for a season ticket without buying the monthly slip.

This costs 10.000 lire and all you have to do is ask for an application form, fill it in and hand it in together with a passport photo. It will be ready within a couple of days and from that moment on you can enjoy the same rights as a Venetian.

A gondola ride for 700 lire. All Venetians and commuters are well aware of this, unlike the tourists: you can get on a gondola and cross the Canal Grande for a mere 700 lire.

All you have to do is go to one of the stazi (gondola stations) that offer this extremely useful “ferry” service, in addition to that of the public transport of the ACTV.
