VENICE MARATHON
(October)
One of the most characteristic marathons in the world, going past
the villas of theRiviera del Brenta and arriving in the historic
centre of Venice.
The race covers the official olympic length of (42 Km.and 195 metres)
and it was one of the first Italian marathons to be recognised by
the A.I.M.S. (Association of International Marathons and Road Races).
It is the only one in the international calendar of the I.A.A.F.
(International Athletic Amateurs Federation). The race starts at
Villa Pisani di Stra (Padua), continues along the river Brenta,
past Fiesso, Dolo, Mira, Oriago, Marghera and Mestre, Piazza S.
Marco and ending in Riva Sette Martiri near the Giardini della Biennale.
It has become one of the "classic" marathons and each year the number
of partipants grows, with people coming from all over the world.
Occasionally - the last time being 1999- the athletes have had to
cross stretches under water owing to the famous "acqua alta".
