VOGALONGA
(May)
This
race first began in 1974 and takes place annually. All types of
rowing boats may take part.
The initiative wanted to revive the Venetian tradition of rowing
and has now become an authentic Venetian event: initially about
500 Venetian-owned boats took part but the number has now risen
to over 1700 with more than 5000 rowers who come from all over the
world.
The
race covers a distance of approximately 30 kilometres and starts
from S.Marco, crosses the lagoon to the lesser known islands such
as the Vignole, S.Erasmo, S.Francesco del Deserto, Burano, Mazzorbo
and Murano. The competitors then come back to Venice via the Canale
di Cannaregio and the Canal Grande, ending at the Punta della Dogana
opposite S.Marco.
No motor boats are allowed in the areas near and around the area
of the race.
