NEW YEAR 2001
(31st December - 1st January)
It has become increasingly common for local inhabitants and tourists to gather in Piazza S. Marco to greet the New Year together. Since 1999 the "Associazione Albergatori" has been organizing fireworks in Bacino S.Marco to create an event that is more in harmony with the atmosphere in the city (as well as to attract more tourists).
However, once again the Comune di Venezia was found wanting and, unlike many other cities, did not organize concerts and festivities in the squares, thus disappointing the many who came to the city to welcome the new millennium.
