CHURCH OF SANT'ALVISE
Built in 1388 in an area that was isolated at that time, surrounded
by orchards and gardens with the lagoon behind it.
Gothic brick church, typically conventual, with a single nave and square
apse chancel.
Façade divided by six equidistant pilasters that are slightly protruding.
The doorway with a prothyrum with the statue of a saint in the lunette
(Gothic sculpture from the XV cent.).
The interior was modified in the 1600's as was the flat ceiling with
affrescoes, whereas the apse still preserves some of the original Gothic
structure. Inside there is an ancient "barco" (singing gallery
for the nuns) supported by columns with capitals and Gothic barbacani
(wooden beam supports), one of the first examples of its kind to be
used by the nuns belonging to the convent. A series of square windows
was opened in the 1700's with a grilles so that the nuns could listen
to the church services.
The bell tower was built together with the church and has preserved
its original Gothic structure with its "pine-cone" steeple
and little corner towers.
The Convent which is on the right side of the church has two cloisters,
one of which has preserved its original brick arcading.
