S.MARIA DELLA SALUTE

1631-1687 (B.Longhena)

Votive temple built following a decree by the Senate of the Republic during the plague of 1630.

Façade decorated with numerous pilasters, typanum and statues, characterised by the original circular volutes (called "orecchioni").
A long flight of steps leads to the main entrance and the two side doors.

Octagonal plan.
Central body with an enormous hemispherical dome with lantern.
Peribolus, from which radiate six chapels.

The chancel forms an independent body with dome and two bell towers..
In the middle is the high altar designed by Longhena with sculptures by Le Court.
